Dode KV6 in 825 Coupé - Wat is er fout gegaan?

Hoi forummers,

I’am trying to get my fathers 1996 825 Coupé (125.000mi) back on track, but could use ideas from more experienced mechanics (as this is my first DIY project and we are running out of inspiration ).
The engine has suddenly (first 1 cylinder bank failed, now both are dead) dropped dead….it doesn’t do a thing anymore (no hiccups, no explosions, really nothing). All that happens is it turns nicely together with starter, but it doesn’t even want to start.
Things we’ve done:
- ignition: works: ther are strong sparks between disconnected lead and chassis.
- fuel supply: with removed inlet manifold and trying to start some fuel is spilled and sometimes it fires just 1 time (once in 30 seconds of running the starter) and than you can see the spilled fuel burning away (is it normal to be able to witness this…?)
- valve timing&opening: removed 1 valve cover and checked valve openings together with piston position: mate says it’s OK, I am not sure, wasn’t able to check properly (how do we turn the crackshaft slowly?)
- start pilot/spray: the mist is not inhaled…what makes me think of a valve timing problem again.
I also remember reading on the forum about bad ignition timing due to passed out crack shaft position sensor....do you think this is possible (how do we check this)? Do you guys think of any other possibilities? If yes, how can we check them?
Alvast bedankt voor enige nuttige tips of ideeën
